Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common term that refers to infection of the fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus), uterus (womb) and other reproductive organs of females.
It is a widespread and serious problem of some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), particularly Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. PID can damage the fallopian tubes and tissues in and near the uterus and ovaries. PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease) can lead to serious results including ectopic pregnancy (when a pregnancy takes place in the fallopian tube or elsewhere outside of the womb), infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and abscess formation.
