The only present CDC-recommended options for the treatment of gonorrhea or Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections are from a single group of antibiotics, “The Cephalosporins”.
Within this group of medications:
1. Only Ceftriaxone is available as an injection, is the CDC recommended cure for all types of gonorrhea infections (i.e. rectal, urogenital, and pharyngeal).
2. The only oral agent currently recommended by CDC for treatment of simple urogenital or rectal gonorrhea is one dose of cefixime 400 mg. Availability of cefixime had been inadequate since July 2002, at what time Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) stop manufacturing cefixime tablets in the United States of America. In April 2008, cefixime (Suprax®) 400 mg tablets are again obtainable in the United States.
