Antibiotics for the treatment of Gonorrhea

Antibiotics that always used for the treatment of gonorrhea are:
  1. Amoxicillin 2 g plus probenecid 1 g orally.
  2. Azithromycin 2 g orally.
  3. Ampicillin 2 to 3 g plus probenecid 1 g orally
  4. Cefotaxime 500 mg by intramuscular injection
  5. Cefixime or Suprax 400 mg orally
  6. Cefpodoxime (Vantin) 400 mg orally
  7. Cefoxitin 2 g by intramuscular injection, plus probenecid 1 g orally
  8. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) 125 to 250 mg by intramuscular injection
  9. Ciprofloxacin 500 mg orally
  10. Ofloxacin 400 mg orally
  11. Spectinomycin 2 g by intramuscular injection
  12. Levofloxacin 250 mg orally

These antibiotics are all given in a single dosage.

The antibiotics fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin or ofloxacin) cannot be used in pregnancy.

Patients are supposed to be offered screening for other kinds of sexually transmitted infections. Penicillin is unsuccessful at treating rectal gonorrhea: this is for the reason that other bacteria within the rectum or anal canal produce β-lactamases that demolish penicillin.
